Why Operational research

By definition:
Operational research is a method of mathematically based analysis for providing a quantitive basis for management decisions.

This branch goes way back to 1840s’ where they started using OR for calculating Cost of transportation, sorting of mails and some research works under Charles Babbage and other scientists. It was World war II , that bought new dimension to OR, for military defense and was applied by British scientists to analyse the radar communications, deployment of aircrafts in war zone and so on.
At the end of the world war II , with the help of simplex algorithm for linear programming, the OR started coming out for more civilized uses.

  • Operational research is an Art and Science.
  • The Britishers call it "Operational Research" whereas Americans call it "Operations Research".
  • Operational Research is also called Management science, Decision science, Industrial engineering.
  • It is often considered to be sub-field of mathematics.
  • Sometimes this subject is also called as "Operations Research and Management Science".

Scope of Operational Research:

  • Optimization problems
  • Project Planning
  • Scheduling
  • Supply chain management
  • Marketing and crediting

Career in Operation Research

  • If you are one with the aptitude for math and logic, to find secret patterns in data and determined to work through problem to get the best solution of all, then you are up to choose OR.
  • The common designations are analysts and scientists.
  • It is an ideal career choice and will always flourish with decent financial securities.
  • It is one of the aftersought carrer to begin with.
